It Came from eBay Hell: ‘80s VW Golf Stretch Limo with Mercedes Nose

So you want your own limousine? Sure, I can dig that. Who hasn’t thought of trading in their daily commute for something that’s chauffer driven? And what better place to start your search than on eBay, where you’re sure to find something both unique and affordable, if not exactly well built or driveable.

Here’s one such find, based on a 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit (Golf for the rest of the world) with a Mercedes-Benz nose piece. The seller’s description reveals that this vehicle has new brakes, struts, a new exhaust, new wheels and tires, new windshield and gas tank. And it still has its original motor and transmission, with a twin barrel carburettor with aluminium intake and header which the seller assures us makes it, “Fast for what it is.”

Inside there are two bench seats facing each other, and an electrically operated tinted glass partition that can separate the passengers from the driver. Classy.

The interior is in need of a lot of attention, though. There’s no headliner, no carpet and the custom interior panels have yet to be fitted. The air conditioning’s not hooked up and there’s no sound system, either. The car’s also missing a, “Few other odds and ends.”

On the upside, it has a clear title and the car comes with a fixer upper GTI engine and a white rabbit plush toy that has been stretched and has a VW hat on its head. Sadly there are no pictures of the latter. The starting price is a low, low US$4,999.00 (€3,676). Price for a first generation Rabbit, but not bad for something with such...uh...”unique qualities.”

The strange this is, this car has been on sale before, almost two years ago. And it was in the exact same state it’s in now. We don’t know what this means, except maybe that the owner grew tired of working on it. Take that however you want, and leave your comments below.

Volkswagen Golf Mk7 Set to Debut at the End of 2012 or Early 2013

The Volkswagen Golf Mk7, based on the cost-saving modular transverse architecture known as MQB, is scheduled to debut at the “end of 2012 or early 2013”, according to a Reuters report citing a company spokesman.

The German automaker plans to eventually build some 3 million MQB-based vehicles annually across the group and expects savings in the double-digit percentage range thanks to a new production process. Unlike previous strategies that offered synergies across brands using the same underpinnings, the new manufacturing method delivers synergies across both brands and models.

As for the Mk7, buyers can expect conventional models to be powered by a range of turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines, while eco-friendly variants will get all-electric or hybrid (gasoline-electric or diesel electric) powertrains.

The design is a mystery at this point as scoop photos have only revealed test mules and not actual Mk7 prototypes, but it’s a pretty safe bet to say that the new Golf will borrow some styling cues from the current Jetta and Passat.

The first non-Volkswagen model to use the MQB platform will be the new Audi A3 due in the summer of 2012.

VIDEO: "Buying a Volkswagen from an Old Lady" Dutch Ad is Epic

In what could very well be one of the most amusing automotive-related ads we've seen this year, this Volkswagen commercial from The Netherlands puts a surprisingly wild twist on the belief that old ladies take good care of their cars. The 50 second-long clip finishes with the tagline "Not every old lady is reliable as a Golf". Watch the video after the break.

APS Does it Again, Announces New Tunes for VW Golf R with up to 350HP

Now that Volkswagen has broadened the availability of the Golf R by officially confirming sales for North America, the tunes for the range-topping German hatch have just become a bit more interesting. APS of Brackley, has just announced three stages of performance tuning for the 2.0-litre TFSI, all-wheel drive Golf R, with two being available immediately and the third to be offered in a little while.

The British firm's Stage 1 kit consists only of a ECU remap, which is good enough to increase peak output from 267bhp to 308 bhp. It is priced at £445.00 including VAT (US$705 / €525).

The Stage 2 package is more comprehensive and includes a Milltek large bore turbo down pipe, high flow sports catalyst and a choice of Milltek stainless steel sports exhausts, featuring a switchable electronic exhaust valve, 2.75 inch bore tubing and dual 100mm ceramic black tailpipes.

APS said customers can choose between a Milltek non-resonated cat-back system, which emphasizes performance and "aural excitement", or a resonated Milltek cat back exhaust, which majors on refinement and also benefits from EC type approval. Depending on the exhaust choice, output is lifted to around 320-330bhp. The Stage 2 kit is priced from £1999 (US$3,165 / €2,355) fitted and including VAT.

Last but not least, APS is readying a Stage 3 package, which comes complete with a revised turbocharger boosting output to 350 bhp. The tuner said the kit is still in development but will be released onto the market soon.

In addition to the power upgrades, APS also offers a range of chassis upgrades for the VW Golf R such as a three way adjustable Haldex Gen4 four wheel drive controller, sports lowering springs, KW height and damping adjustable coilover suspension, uprated suspension bushes, Brembo GT big brake kits, plus 18 or 19 inch Sportec Mono 10 forged alloy wheels with Toyo tires.

Officially Confirmed: New Volkswagen Golf R to go on Sale in the USA

Hot hatches are mostly a European fad, but Volkswagen’s R- and GTI-badged products have proved successful in the North American market over the years. That said, VW loyalists will be happy to know that the new Golf R has finally received the green light for America. No specific launch date was given, but according to the official announcement, the U.S.-bound Golf R will be released in “limited numbers and for a very limited time” starting from 2012.

Already offered in Europe and other markets, the Golf R32's successor ditches the naturally aspirated V6 in favor of a turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI engine. The Euro-spec model’s four-pot is rated at 270 hp and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque, bringing it closer to the STi and EVO X. Available in both 3- and 5-door flavors, the R also features VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive with a Haldex differential.

The 0 to 100km/h (62mph) sprint is completed in 5.7 seconds when the Golf R is equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox, and in 5.5 seconds when gears are shifted with VW's optional DSG dual clutch transmission. In both cases top speed is limited to 250km/h or 155 mph.

As for the U.S. version, detailed specifications should be available later on.

Volkswagen Brightens up Golf with New LED Front Lights

Those of you with a good memory probably remember that back in late 2009, Volkswagen developed a new set of LED tail lights for the sportiest variants of the Golf VI. Now it's time for the German carmaker to introduce the same option for the Golf's headlights - at least for the European market. The new optional LEDs for the headlamps are similar in design to those found on the facelifted Eos hardtop convertible.

Within the housings of the bi-xenon headlamps, 15 LEDs form the daytime running lights offering improved visibility in all weather conditions over the standard lamps. The package, which combines the Bi-Xenon headlamps with the LEDs is priced in Germany at €1,310 or about US$1,750 at today's exchange rates.

Mini-me Volkswagen Gol for Little People [with Video]

Being a little person in a big world is daily challenge for some of our fellow citizens. And even though technological advancements have it made it possible for little people to drive any car available today, Volkswagen's Brazilian division has taken one step further with the creation of a prototype, miniaturized version of its local market Gol hatchback.

The little people's car is called the Mini-Gol and it has been scaled down by approximately 30 percent over the standard car. It measures around 2.25 meters (88.5") in length and can accommodate drivers and passengers under 5ft tall (1.53 meters).

As you can see in the video clip after the jump, it is an exact replica of the original model with power coming from 5.5-horsepower engine that offers the car a top speed of 27km/h (17mph). According to the reports, VW Brazil has built only two examples of the Mini-Gol, with one being used at various events and shows, and the other finding a home at Parque de Ocio in Santa Catarina, Brazil.
